Description
These pieces are so close to my heart. I’ve been collecting Gucci ads from magazines for probably a decade… instead of being serious and pretentious, Gucci regularly does ads that are weird, happy, and whimsical. You’ll find a space robot in this painting, Snoop Dogg in a teal tux, Miley eating cake, clowns, and a ribbon twirler all in Gucci ads.
The piece is a reminder that joy is one of the greatest luxuries of being alive. It’s in the little details and the big moments, and it comes from an un-serious outlook on life. Though the societal sense of luxury involves work, masking, ego, and peacocking, the most readily felt luxuries are in joy, connection, wonder, and full-out self-expression.
These Gucci pieces are a new edge for me. I learned a lot about the mechanics of mixed media, epoxy, and canvas. Still, I’m pleased with the result.
