This idea started with the question, “what’s the most absurd thing to pair with a disco ball?” Iguanas can come in all colors, and the two together seemed funny to me.

As I worked on the piece, the symbolism started to come out. The reptilian, survival-based mind vs. a colorful signature of celebration. A thing that basks in the sun to absorb it, vs. a thing that reflects light around it. A scaly creature with wrinkles and bug eyes vs. a sparkling perfect sphere.

I enjoy this piece mostly for the humor in it, and I like the reminder that life is both/and. It’s both our subconscious surviving mind and our conscious bright mind. Sometimes things are ugly and sometimes they’re lovely, and holding both together makes a much more full and dynamic storyline.
